# 5 Why do people move away? / Thuraipakkam

"Why do people move away? What leads them to pull up their roots and leave behind everything familiar to break into a great unknown beyond the horizon? Why climb Mount Everest from the authorities and feel like a beggar here? Why go to a strange jungle, where everything is new, different and dangerous?
The answer is always the same: to move away because they hope for a better life. "
(continued from p.138)
People in Thuraipakkam (two hours south of Chennai) have their roots elsewhere. They lived in the slums in the city center, on the beach in Santhome and . 13 slums in other areas were closed to Chennai can be a boom of tourism beauty -. after the presentation of the Government of 70,000 people were displaced and now live in Thuraipakkam The uniformity of the buildings is reminiscent of communist settlements, but the visible poverty looks more like ghettos.. The infrastructure is bad: no public schools in the area, no medical care, distance to town 2 hours, the water tanks are filled only 2 times a week, waste collection is almost not at all. But people have seen more objectively than before, because now they have stone buildings, which contain even halfway acceptable housing. But one thing they have not: your home, your home!
only way I can explain to me why they handle so with "their" new location. Within the row house is vacant land consisting of rubble and garbage. The plan for the city, this area as " Park" is called.
UDAVI would like to create with the children and young people a space where they romp, play and can try out. For but they must also assume responsibility gradually. What does that mean? Tomorrow we start there to build a playground (see chart). The concept and planning, I have worked out this week with the staff of UDAVI and the Volunteers. The budget is very small, so that is first hand time. Sponsors for games we are looking for in the next week. I'm curious to see how the day runs tomorrow. Ca. 25 children and young people run there tomorrow, shovels and wheelbarrows has organized Jessudoss hopefully. A little did I know the mentality of the Indians, already, so that I know that the life of the planning is rather short. But I have also learned that enthusiasm that young people can create the day.
is the hope with this site that they create themselves and create a piece of home to improve their lives. ..
